Start simple

You do not need perfect Turkish to make a friendly introduction. “Merhaba” means hello, “Nasılsın?” means how are you, and “Tanıştığımıza memnun oldum” is a polite way to say you are pleased to meet someone. If you are still learning, it is perfectly reasonable to explain that at the beginning.

Ask questions with real answers

Try questions that invite more than yes or no: What city would you recommend visiting in Turkey? Which Turkish food should a visitor try first? What music have you been listening to lately? Which football team do you follow? What is your city like?

These work because the other person can add an opinion or personal experience. Once they answer, respond to what they actually said rather than jumping to another prepared question.

Useful Turkish phrases

“Nerelisin?” asks where someone is from. “Hangi müzikleri seviyorsun?” asks what music they like. “Türkiye'de nereleri gezmeliyim?” asks which places in Turkey you should visit. “Türkçe öğreniyorum” means “I am learning Turkish.” These phrases are useful starting points, but a conversation becomes more natural when you combine them with your own interests.

Avoid copy-paste introductions

Generic messages sent to many people are easy to recognize. A short message connected to the current room or topic feels more genuine. If someone does not respond, move on politely rather than repeatedly messaging them.
